[PREMIERE] Best Picture Feat. Max Green: Get U Thru

And the 2018 Kick Kick Snare award for Best Picture goes to..."Get U Thru."  *applause*  Please welcome to the stage, Los Angeles (via San Diego) production duo consisting of Cubbi & John War, alongside trusted music confidant Max Green for their acceptance speeches. First to take the microphone is Best Picture who are quickly making a name for themselves having already collaborated with many rising names in underground hip hop including Chester Watson, Lil West and Adamn Killa, as well as celebrated singer-songwriters such as Miya Folick, Lizzy Land, and of course...

We’ve been friends with Max for years—back in high school in San Diego, it seemed like every local show we played or went to had Max on the bill. One of Max’s talents we admire most is his ability to make any aural space his own. His fluid songwriting, rich harmonies and unique personality add warmth to songs in places you’d never expect. That was definitely true for ‘Get U Thru.’ Watching Max come in and transform our track into a catchy, totally relatable song about steadying on through sorry times was truly a pleasure. It’s the kind of song you can listen to over and over again; it’s got a groove, but it’s poignant too.

*more crowd applause* As Max Green moves to the center of the podium, and before the "get off the stage" music starts to play, I should add not only did John War apprentice under Norwegian producer Axident (Justin Bieber, Jason Derulo), and has since had his production appear in publications like the The FADER, NOISEY and Stereogum, but Cubbi was trained under renowned media theorist Dick Hebdige, as well as spoken word poet and writer Kip Fulbeck. Makes you want to immediately add a 100 things to your to-do-list and tell yourself to keep the heck up.

John & Cubbi have been good friends of mine for some time now, and after making the move to Los Angeles last year and hearing what they’ve been up to musically I knew we had to collab ASAP. ‘Get U Thru’ recalls a particular time period for me when I was evading my own insecurities through sex/drugs/alcohol etc. I reached this point where I felt as though I tried so hard to be this good person my entire life and yet I was still ridden with anxiety and depression. So this song is almost like a sad-boi ‘fuck it’ anthem saying sometimes you need to make bad decisions if that’s what you needed that night. It was my first time singing over a beat like this and it just came together naturally at the session.
